Why the Right Hot Water System Matters
Hot water makes up around 21% of household energy use in Queensland, and the system you choose has a significant impact on running costs, comfort and environmental footprint. Get the choice right and you’ll enjoy reliable hot water for fifteen years or more. Get it wrong and you can end up with a system that’s undersized, expensive to run or constantly underperforming.
This guide covers the four main system types available on the Sunshine Coast, the factors that matter most when comparing them, and the questions to ask before signing off on a purchase.
The Four Main System Types
Gas Hot Water
Gas systems are popular for fast recovery and lower running costs than standard electric. Storage units hold heated water in a tank ready to use, while continuous flow units heat water only as you need it, taking up less space and never running out. Gas requires a connection to natural gas (mains) or LPG bottles, which adds to the upfront cost if not already in place.
Electric Hot Water
Electric storage tanks remain the most common system in Australian homes, mainly because they are simple, reliable and inexpensive to install. The downside is running cost. Standard electric systems on a continuous tariff are typically the most expensive to run of all the options, though off-peak tariffs and well-sized tanks can offset this somewhat.
Solar Hot Water
Solar systems use roof-mounted panels to heat water through the day, backed up by an electric or gas booster for overcast periods. In sunny Queensland, solar can dramatically cut running costs, and small-scale technology certificate (STC) rebates take a chunk off the upfront price. Best suited to homes with good north-facing roof access and steady daytime hot water demand.
Heat Pump Hot Water
Heat pumps work like a reverse air conditioner, drawing heat from the surrounding air and using it to heat water in a tank. They use around a third of the electricity of a standard electric system and qualify for generous federal and state rebates that can reduce the upfront cost by thousands. They do require some clear external space and produce a low operating hum, so placement matters.
Sizing Your System Correctly
Undersizing is one of the most common mistakes we see. As a rough guide:
- 1 to 2 people: 50L electric, 90L gas, 160L solar or heat pump
- 3 to 4 people: 125L to 160L electric, 130L to 170L gas, 250L to 315L solar or heat pump
- 5 or more people: 250L to 315L electric, 170L+ gas continuous flow, 315L+ solar or heat pump
If you have a busy household, multiple bathrooms or a spa bath, your sizing should be on the larger end of the range or a continuous flow option.
Running Cost Comparison
For a four-person Sunshine Coast household, typical annual running costs look something like this:
- Standard electric storage: $850 to $1,200
- Off-peak electric storage: $500 to $750
- Natural gas storage or continuous flow: $400 to $650
- Solar with electric booster: $200 to $400
- Heat pump: $250 to $450
Heat pumps and solar are the clear winners on running costs, particularly for households without access to off-peak tariffs.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy

- Is this brand readily serviceable in my area?
- Are rebates included in the quoted price or applied separately?
- Will I need any additional electrical or gas work?
- What’s the noise rating and where will it be installed?
